The Fort Saskatchewan Furniture Bank was initially established in December 2016 to serve the needs of families facing domestic abuse and those trapped in abusive relationships. Over time the scope of the organization was expanded to deal with growing demands from a wider range of situations including homelessness, families facing financial issues, families facing fire or other
disasters, as well as immigrants requiring a hand up to establish their home in Fort Saskatchewan.
During the life of the organization, hundreds of families were provided with furniture and household belongings, allowing them to start a safe new home in Fort Saskatchewan. Volunteers with the Furniture Bank collected donations of furniture and household items from the generous donors in Fort Saskatchewan, that were then provided to families in need. For over eight years, the volunteer run Fort Saskatchewan Furniture Bank worked tirelessly to ensure that those in need would be provided with housing essentials on a timely basis.
After years of service to the community of Fort Saskatchewan, the organization has been faced with a decline in the demand for services due to low vacancy rates and a lack of affordable housing. It has been challenging to recruit volunteers and Board members for the Furniture Bank, and despite ongoing fundraising efforts, it has been a struggle to keep the Furniture Bank funded to support its ongoing work. Given these ongoing challenges, the Board of Fort Saskatchewan Furniture Bank has made the very difficult decision to cease operations and close down the organization effective April 30, 2025. Everyone that has been involved with the Furniture Bank is extremely proud of the work that we have done to support those in need at a very difficult time in their lives. This truly has been a heartwarming and rewarding experience for all that have been involved in this valuable community service. The Board would like to acknowledge and thank the many clients, volunteers, donors, financial supporters, vendors, and individuals and companies that have supported us along this journey.
